Description
FortiGate 50G-SFP Dubai Desktop Firewall with SFP WAN 5 Gbps 1.1 Gbps TP
A small Dubai branch can get messy fast. One Etisalat link, one du backup, a fibre handoff in the wall cabinet, three switches, ten VPN users, and somebody still expects web filtering to run without slowing Teams calls. That’s the point where a basic router starts showing its age.
The FortiGate 50G-SFP is made for that kind of site. Not a rack firewall. Not a noisy appliance sitting under a desk. A fanless desktop FortiGate with a 1 GE SFP port, 1 GE RJ45 WAN port, 1 GE RJ45 FortiLink port, and 3 GE RJ45 Ethernet ports. For Business Bay offices, JLT branches, DMCC micro-offices, clinics, retail counters, school admin blocks, and small warehouses where the internet handoff may already be fibre.
The two numbers to read together are firewall throughput and threat protection throughput. FortiGate 50G-SFP delivers 5 Gbps firewall throughput and 1.1 Gbps threat protection throughput. The second number is the one that matters when IPS, application control, antivirus, and malware protection are switched on.
FortiGate 50G-SFP overview
FortiGate 50G-SFP is a desktop security appliance for branch firewall, VPN, WAN edge, and controlled internet access. It sits in the small-office tier, but the port layout makes it more useful than the plain copper-only models when the UAE ISP handoff or internal uplink needs SFP.
You get 1 x GE SFP, 1 x GE RJ45 WAN, 1 x GE RJ45 FortiLink, 3 x GE RJ45 Ethernet, USB, and console. That means a branch can keep one copper WAN, use the SFP for fibre handoff or upstream connectivity, and still reserve FortiLink for FortiSwitch control. Clean cabling. Fewer media converters. Less heat in a small cabinet.
In a typical Dubai branch, this model fits 10–75 users. Think accounting office in Deira, clinic reception and doctors’ rooms in Al Barsha, retail POS and back-office traffic in Dubai Mall support areas, or a JAFZA warehouse office with a small admin team and VPN back to head office. For bigger server-room deployments, check the wider FortiGate firewall Dubai range before locking the bill of material.
Why the SFP model matters
FG-50G-SFP is not just a FortiGate 50G with another label. The 1 GE SFP port is useful where the WAN or upstream switch is fibre-based, common in UAE business towers and free zone offices. It reduces the need for a separate media converter and keeps the firewall cabinet cleaner.
FortiGuard licensing: hardware is only half the job
The hardware gives you routing, firewalling, VPN, VLANs, HA, and policy control. FortiGuard is what adds the live security layer: IPS signatures, application control, web category filtering, antivirus protection, sandbox checks, and botnet protection. Without the right licence, the firewall is still useful, but you won’t get the threat services most buyers expect when they say “NGFW”.
FortiGuard Bundle Options
UTP Bundle includes IPS, Application Control, Web Filtering, Antivirus, FortiSandbox Cloud, and Botnet protection where supported on the model. Enterprise Bundle adds wider FortiGuard services for organisations that need more visibility and control. Both bundles are available in 1-year and 3-year terms. The 3-year term usually makes more sense for branch rollouts because it reduces renewal admin and annual procurement noise.
For a 10-site branch project, the licence choice affects daily support. A 1-year UTP bundle may suit a small office where the internet policy is simple: block risky categories, inspect malware, control apps, and keep VPN clean. A 3-year Enterprise bundle makes more sense when the firewall is part of a wider Fortinet estate with FortiSwitch, FortiAP, central logging, and stricter compliance notes from DIFC, DMCC, DAFZA, or a healthcare customer.
For Etisalat Business or du Enterprise WAN links, we usually size the licence against real inspected traffic, not just the internet speed printed on the ISP invoice. A 1 Gbps line doesn’t mean 1 Gbps of threat-scanned traffic all day. But if the branch uses SSL inspection, heavy SaaS traffic, guest WiFi, and site-to-site VPN, the 1.1 Gbps threat protection figure must be respected.
FortiGuard licence not included
The FortiGate hardware and FortiGuard subscription are separate line items unless your quote states a bundle. IPS signatures, web filtering, antivirus definitions, FortiSandbox Cloud, and live threat feeds require a UTP or Enterprise bundle licence. Check the licence term before comparing prices.

High availability and branch resilience
FortiGate 50G-SFP supports Active-Active HA, Active-Passive HA, and clustering. For small sites, Active-Passive is normally the clean choice: one unit handles production traffic, the second unit waits as standby. When the live firewall fails, traffic moves to the standby firewall according to the HA design.
This is useful where even a small outage hurts: pharmacy POS, clinic appointment systems, school admin portals, warehouse ERP, or branch VPN back to head office. In Dubai, many small offices run dual WAN with Etisalat and du. Pairing dual ISP links with an HA pair gives the site two layers of protection: WAN path resilience and firewall hardware resilience.
HA sizing note
For an HA pair, use the same FortiGate model and align FortiGuard licence terms on both units. The FortiGate 50G-SFP supports 5 VDOMs, so an MSSP or IT team can separate guest WiFi, admin traffic, POS, and VPN policies without moving to a rackmount model.
For sites that need more copper ports, higher inspection headroom, or a rack unit, compare this model with FortiGate 70G and FortiGate 90G. The FortiGate 50G-SFP is the right choice when the branch needs desktop size, SFP uplink, low power draw, and 1.1 Gbps inspected threat protection.
Desktop form factor for UAE branch sites
The FortiGate 50G-SFP is a desktop firewall, not a rackmount unit. It measures 40.5 x 216 x 160 mm, weighs 1.0 kg, and runs fanless at 0 dBA. That makes it practical for branch cabinets, reception back rooms, small clinic IT corners, retail stores, and serviced offices where there’s no proper 19-inch rack.
Power draw is low: 8.3 W average and 8.9 W maximum. In Dubai, that matters more than people think. A small wall cabinet in JLT or Business Bay can already be warm because of switches, ONT equipment, access-control panels, and a UPS. A fanless firewall keeps heat and noise down without asking facilities to change the cabinet layout.
For user count, we normally place the FortiGate 50G-SFP in the 10–75 user bracket. It fits branch offices, clinics, retail outlets, school admin networks, small warehouses, and managed customer sites where an MSSP wants FortiGate control without moving to a 1U rack firewall. For a larger regional office with heavier VPN, multiple VLANs, and more inspected traffic, move up to the FortiGate 70G or FortiGate 90G.
FortiSP5 / SOC5 ASIC advantage
The FortiGate 50G-SFP belongs to the G-Series branch firewall line and uses Fortinet’s SOC5 architecture, also referred to as SP5 in Fortinet’s security processing family. In plain words, packet handling, content inspection, and encryption are pushed into Fortinet silicon instead of leaving everything to a normal CPU.
FortiSP5 ASIC — What It Changes
The SP5 security processing design gives the FortiGate 50G-SFP 5 Gbps firewall throughput and 1.1 Gbps threat protection throughput in a desktop chassis with 8.3 W average power use. That’s why it suits branch cabinets where heat, power, and space are limited.
This matters in the UAE branch tier. Many small offices now run cloud accounting, Microsoft 365, POS systems, remote access VPN, CCTV uplinks, and guest WiFi through the same WAN edge. The firewall has to inspect traffic without turning into a hot little box in the cabinet.
If you’re coming from a 40F, 50E, 60E, or 60F branch design, the 50G-SFP brings the newer G-Series direction with an SFP uplink option and higher inspected throughput for small sites. It’s the model to consider when the site needs fibre handoff support but still doesn’t justify a 1U appliance.
Model variants: SFP, PoE, storage, and FortiWiFi
The FortiGate 50G-SFP name can be confusing because there are several closely related variants. The standard FG-50G-SFP is the clean choice when you need SFP uplink and normal powered Ethernet switching is handled elsewhere. The FG-50G-SFP-PoE adds PoE+ for small deployments where powered ports are needed near the firewall.
The FG-51G-SFP-PoE adds onboard storage and PoE+ in the same family. The FortiWiFi 50G-SFP variant adds integrated WiFi 6, useful for very small sites that don’t want a separate access point. For most Dubai business networks, we still prefer separate FortiAP access points when coverage, roaming, VLAN mapping, and guest WiFi policy need to be controlled properly.
Choosing the right 50G-SFP variant
Pick FG-50G-SFP for fibre uplink and normal switching. Pick the PoE model when small powered devices sit near the firewall. Pick FortiWiFi 50G-SFP only when integrated WiFi 6 is really needed. For multi-room offices, separate FortiAP units usually give cleaner coverage.
What’s in the box
A normal FortiGate 50G-SFP hardware box includes the firewall appliance, external power adapter, regional power cable, and quick-start material. The unit includes USB and console access for setup, with front-facing network ports for the SFP, WAN, FortiLink, and LAN connections.
For project orders, the firewall is usually supplied with the selected FortiGuard licence term as a separate subscription entitlement. UTP Bundle and Enterprise Bundle are available in 1-year and 3-year terms. For HA pairs, quote both units with matching licence coverage so procurement doesn’t end up renewing two firewalls on different dates.
SFP module not included unless listed on the quote
The FG-50G-SFP has a 1 GE SFP port, but the transceiver module is normally a separate item. Add the correct SFP module, patch lead, rack shelf if needed, and FortiGuard licence term to the bill of material before placing the order.

UAE deployment notes
The FortiGate 50G-SFP works well for UAE branches with one primary Etisalat Business link and one du backup link. It can run site-to-site IPsec VPN back to head office, control guest internet, block risky web categories, and apply application policy for common SaaS traffic. The 4.5 Gbps IPsec VPN throughput gives enough headroom for branch tunnel use.
For DMCC, DIFC, DAFZA, and JAFZA offices, the common requirement is clean separation between staff VLAN, guest WiFi, POS or ERP traffic, and management access. The FortiGate 50G-SFP supports 5 VDOMs and 2,000 firewall policies, enough for many small multi-zone branches without making the design heavy.
For hotel admin offices, clinic branches, real estate offices, construction project offices, and retail counters, the fanless desktop build is a quiet advantage. No noise at reception. No hot 1U box stuffed into a wooden cabinet. Just a small firewall that can still inspect 1.1 Gbps of threat-protected traffic.
Africa, GCC, and MEA export from Dubai
FortiGate 50G-SFP is a good fit for branch rollout projects across East Africa, GCC, and South Asia. Common export requests include Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Oman, Bahrain, and Pakistan, usually in 5-unit to 50-unit orders with FortiGuard UTP or Enterprise licensing. FOB Dubai pricing is available for resellers, system integrators, and MSSPs.
For export orders, confirm the exact SKU before shipping: FG-50G-SFP, FG-50G-SFP-PoE, FG-51G-SFP-PoE, or FortiWiFi 50G-SFP. Also confirm licence term, power cable requirement, SFP transceiver, and whether the units will be staged before dispatch. Small mistake on the SKU, big headache at site. Better to lock it early.
