The R550 is a Dell 15G server. That matters if you already run 15G infrastructure. It uses DDR4 memory and iDRAC9, so it fits cleanly beside existing R550, R650xs, R650, and R750-class systems without forcing a mixed DDR4/DDR5 operating model.

What the R550 is built for

The R550 sits in the middle of Dell’s rack server range. It is bigger than the entry single-socket servers and more practical for storage-heavy branch workloads than a high-density 1U node. In plain terms: it is the 2U dual-socket server for companies that need proper compute capacity, but don’t need the highest-end PowerEdge chassis.

Processor platform — 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable

The R550 uses 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. This is the same Intel Ice Lake server generation used across Dell’s 15G portfolio. In the R550, the platform supports up to two processors, with up to 24 cores per socket. That gives a maximum of 48 physical cores in a dual-socket build.

For normal procurement, the conversation is not only about maximum core count. It is about the right CPU for the workload. A VMware cluster node may need balanced core count and clock speed. A SQL Server workload may be licensed per core, so overspecifying the processor can increase software cost more than hardware cost. An Oracle workload needs a different sizing conversation again.

Common R550 processor families include Intel Xeon Silver and Intel Xeon Gold 5300 / 4300 series options. For many UAE mid-market deployments, Xeon Silver 4310, 4314, or 4316-class CPUs are enough. For heavier virtualisation or database use, Xeon Gold SKUs may make sense. We size this based on VM count, RAM requirement, storage type, and licensing impact — not just the highest CPU line in the data sheet.

Memory — DDR4, not DDR5

The platform supports 16 DIMM slots and up to 1TB of DDR4 memory. For VMware and Hyper-V hosts, that memory ceiling is usually more important than CPU. Most virtualised mid-market workloads run out of RAM before they run out of processor. A server with 2 x CPUs and only 64GB RAM is usually underbuilt. A production R550 virtualisation node is more commonly quoted with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or higher, depending on VM density.

DDR4 also makes the R550 useful for cluster matching. If your existing hosts use DDR4, adding a DDR5 server may still work technically, but the cluster becomes mixed. Different firmware behaviour. Different performance profile. Different memory spares. Different procurement path. For some IT teams, that’s acceptable. For others, especially those managing stable VMware clusters, keeping another R550 in the same generation is the cleaner decision.

Cluster expansion note

If your existing production cluster was built on Dell 15G servers between 2021 and 2023, the R550 is still relevant. Matching generation, DDR4 memory, iDRAC9, and firmware behaviour can be more valuable than jumping to a newer generation for one isolated host.

Storage — 16 x 2.5-inch or 8 x 3.5-inch drive layouts

The R550 is a 2U server, which gives it storage flexibility that a 1U system cannot match as easily. The common front-bay options are up to 16 x 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drives or up to 8 x 3.5-inch SAS/SATA drives. The right layout depends on what the server is doing.

For virtualisation, 2.5-inch SSDs usually make more sense. Lower latency, better random I/O, better VM response. A 16 x 2.5-inch chassis can be built with SAS SSDs, SATA SSDs, or a mix based on workload and budget. For database-heavy usage, we normally discuss SSD endurance, RAID level, and controller cache before quoting.

For backup, file services, CCTV archive, and general bulk storage, the 8 x 3.5-inch chassis may be better. Large SAS or SATA HDDs reduce cost per terabyte. A JAFZA warehouse storing scanned customs files or a construction company holding project documents may care more about capacity than flash speed. Different job. Different drive layout.

Hot-plug drive bays allow a failed drive to be replaced without taking the server offline, assuming the RAID set is configured correctly. That last part matters. RAID is not automatic protection. A poor RAID layout can still cause downtime, rebuild risk, or weak performance. We configure RAID before delivery so the server lands ready for the workload.

RAID controller options — PERC and HBA choices

The R550 supports several Dell storage controller options, including S150 software RAID, PERC H345, PERC H355, PERC H745, PERC H755, HBA355i, external PERC H840, and HBA355e. The correct controller depends on drive type, RAID level, cache needs, and whether the server connects to external storage.

For light internal storage, H345 or H355 may be enough. For heavier production storage, especially with multiple SSDs or database workloads, PERC H745 or H755 is usually the more sensible option. If the operating system or hypervisor needs direct disk presentation, HBA355i may be used instead of hardware RAID.

A VMware host booting from BOSS-S2 and using shared SAN storage does not need the same RAID design as a standalone SQL Server with eight internal SSDs. A backup repository with 3.5-inch HDDs needs a different approach again. This is why a one-line “R550 price” is rarely useful. The RAID controller and drive design can change the server’s behaviour more than the CPU upgrade does.

OS and hypervisor licences are not included by default

The PowerEdge R550 is supplied as server hardware unless the quote includes licensing. Windows Server, VMware ESXi, RHEL, SQL Server, and backup software need separate licensing. We include these as line items when required, so procurement sees the real project cost before approval.

iDRAC9 remote management — the part you need when nobody is near the rack

The R550 uses iDRAC9 with Lifecycle Controller. For a production server, this is one of the most useful parts of the platform. iDRAC9 runs independently from the operating system. If Windows Server hangs, VMware stops responding, or the host is stuck during boot, iDRAC9 can still be reachable through its own management interface.

That matters in the UAE because infrastructure is often spread across sites. The IT manager may be in Dubai, the rack may be in a Sharjah warehouse, and the application owner may be calling from Abu Dhabi. With iDRAC9 configured properly, support can check hardware health, view the remote console, power cycle the server, check logs, mount ISO media, and run diagnostics without driving across the emirate.

iDRAC9 also helps with firmware control. Lifecycle Controller allows firmware update jobs, hardware inventory, system logs, and configuration tasks to be handled in a controlled way. In cluster environments, that matters. You don’t want one host running a different BIOS, RAID firmware, or NIC firmware level because somebody updated it manually in a hurry.

Many servers are delivered with iDRAC left at default or half-configured. That wastes one of the main reasons to buy a proper Dell PowerEdge platform.

For Etisalat and du-connected sites, we also discuss how remote support will reach iDRAC. Sometimes that means VPN. Sometimes a management VLAN. Sometimes access through the firewall with strict rules. It depends on the customer’s network. What we don’t recommend is leaving iDRAC exposed to the open internet.

iDRAC9 in the R550

The R550 is a 15G server, so it uses iDRAC9. iDRAC10 is for 17G platforms. For 15G cluster expansion, iDRAC9 consistency is useful because existing Dell OpenManage workflows, alerting, firmware processes, and support habits stay the same.

Operating system support and deployment fit

The R550 is commonly deployed with Windows Server, VMware ESXi, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Ubuntu Server LTS, and Citrix Hypervisor. The OS choice changes the configuration. A Windows Server Hyper-V host with local storage is not the same build as a VMware ESXi node booting from BOSS-S2 and using shared storage. A RHEL database server has different disk, memory, and support needs again.

For Microsoft workloads, we look at Windows Server edition, CALs, SQL Server licensing, backup, and Active Directory role placement. For VMware, we look at CPU compatibility, vCenter version, storage pathing, NIC count, and how the R550 will join the existing cluster. For Linux, we check driver support, RAID controller choice, disk presentation, and vendor support requirements.

This is why installation is part of the VDS service, not an optional afterthought. Rack mounting, firmware checks, RAID creation, OS or hypervisor installation, iDRAC setup, cabling, and handover all affect the first day of production use. A server that arrives in boxes is not infrastructure yet.

The R550 becomes useful when it is configured for the job. That is the difference between buying a server model and deploying a working system.

Power, cooling, and rack planning in UAE server rooms

The R550 is a 2U server, so rack planning is usually easier than with dense 1U nodes. Airflow is front-to-back. Cold air enters from the front drive bay side and exits from the rear. In a proper rack, that means perforated front and rear doors, clean cable dressing, enough clearance behind the server, and no blocked exhaust path.

Dubai server rooms are not always data centres. Some are built properly with dedicated cooling and UPS. Some are converted store rooms near the finance department. Some are warehouse IT closets in JAFZA, DAFZA, Al Quoz, DIP, or Ras Al Khor. The R550 can run in standard office server rooms, but only if the basics are handled: clean power, correct rack depth, stable cooling, and no dust-heavy airflow path.

Dell power supply options for the R550 include 600W Platinum, 700W Titanium, 800W Platinum, 1100W Titanium, and 1100W DC configurations. Dual hot-plug PSU options allow 1+1 redundancy, which is what we recommend for production hosts. One PSU fails, the server stays on. That is the whole point.

The PSU size depends on CPU choice, drive count, PCIe cards, and redundancy requirement. A light file server does not need the same power budget as a dual-processor virtualisation host with 16 SSDs and multiple network adapters. We size this before quoting. Guessing power is not a good plan in a UAE rack room where UPS capacity is already shared with switches, firewalls, PBX, and storage.

Rack depth check before delivery

The R550 is a standard-depth 2U rack server. Before delivery, confirm cabinet depth, rear clearance, PDU position, and cable arm space. This avoids the common Dubai problem: server fits the rack rails, but the rear door won’t close after power and network cables are connected.

Grey market warning — service tag matters

Not every Dell PowerEdge R550 listed in the UAE is authorised-channel stock. Some units enter the market through parallel imports. Some are pulled from overseas projects. Some are refurbished but advertised like new. Some have service tags that do not validate cleanly for UAE warranty.
