Dell PowerEdge R260 Dubai Details

When the rack is shallow, the server choice gets narrow

A small server room in a Dubai clinic. A back-office rack behind a retail counter. A hotel front desk cabinet with switches, firewall, NVR, and one space left for the local application server. Not every site has a 1000mm deep data centre cabinet. Many don’t.

That is where the 1U short-depth server makes sense.

The Dell PowerEdge R260 is a 16th Generation 1U rack server built for SMB, branch office, retail, hospitality, telecom cabinet, and near-edge deployment. It gives you current Dell server management, DDR5 memory, Xeon E-2400 or Xeon 6300 processor options, and iDRAC9 in a chassis that fits where a full-depth rack server becomes a problem.

Vector Digital Systems supplies, configures, installs, and supports the PowerEdge R260 across all 7 UAE emirates. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain. We’ve been working with Dell server deployments since 2009, and the R260 is the model we look at when the customer says: “The cabinet is already installed. It’s not deep. What can we fit?”

16th Generation — current Dell entry platform

The R260 is a 16G PowerEdge server with DDR5 ECC memory, iDRAC9, and a compact 1U chassis. It is the practical upgrade path from PowerEdge R250 and older short-depth branch servers when the workload still fits single-socket infrastructure.

What the R260 is built for

The R260 is not trying to be a large virtualisation host. It is not a dual-socket platform. It is not a storage-heavy 2U server. That is the point.

It is a compact 1U Dell PowerEdge server for sites where the workload is real, but the space and budget are controlled. Think of a retail chain running a local POS database at each branch. A clinic storing local application data before sync. A hotel running a property management service near the front office. A small warehouse office in JAFZA or Al Quoz that needs Active Directory, file sharing, print services, and backup without sending every request over the WAN.

It also fits telecom and network rooms where Etisalat or du circuits terminate into a compact cabinet. The A4 static rail support and short chassis depth matter in those cabinets. A full-depth server can block cabling, hit the rear door, or force bad airflow. The R260 avoids that problem.

For Dubai buyers, that detail matters more than brochure language. Server rooms here are often built after the office is already running. Cabinets are squeezed into IT closets, stock rooms, clinic admin rooms, hotel back offices, and retail counters. Cooling is not always ideal. Ambient temperatures outside are high for much of the year. A short, right-sized 1U server is easier to place, easier to cable, and easier to maintain.

Processor options: Xeon E-2400 and Xeon 6300

The R260 is a single-socket platform. One processor. That keeps power, heat, licensing, and chassis size under control. For the buyer running branch applications, small-office file services, POS, print, backup, or a few light virtual machines, that is usually the correct architecture.

The main processor family is Intel Xeon E-2400. These CPUs are built for entry servers that need ECC memory support, server-grade reliability, and predictable performance without moving into dual-socket pricing. Common configurations use Xeon E-2414, E-2434, E-2478, or E-2488 depending on the required core count and clock speed.

Dell also lists Intel Xeon 6300 series options for the R260. That gives the platform more flexibility for buyers who want a newer CPU option in the same compact chassis. The important note: Xeon 6300 configurations do not support Windows Server 2019. If your branch environment still depends on Windows Server 2019, tell us before quoting. We’ll match the CPU and OS correctly.

Pentium G7400 and G7400T options exist for very light workloads. We only recommend those when the role is narrow: basic edge appliance, domain service at a small site, or low-demand local utility server. For production file, POS, clinic, or hospitality systems, Xeon E-2400 is the better baseline.

Single-socket is a design choice, not a weakness

The R260 is built for workloads that do not need dual CPUs. That matters for small Dubai offices and branch sites because Windows Server, SQL Server, backup software, and hypervisor licensing can become more expensive when the hardware is oversized. Start with the workload. Then size the CPU.

Memory: 128GB DDR5 ECC UDIMM

The R260 supports up to 128GB DDR5 ECC UDIMM memory across 4 DIMM slots. That is the correct ceiling for this class of server. Enough for a domain controller, file services, light virtualisation, POS database, backup software, small ERP instance, or local branch application. Not enough for a dense virtualisation cluster. That workload belongs on a larger PowerEdge model.

DDR5 matters because this is a 16G PowerEdge platform. If you are replacing older R250 or R240 hardware, you are moving from the previous memory generation to DDR5. You cannot reuse DDR4 DIMMs from older servers. That should be planned into the upgrade cost.

For most UAE deployments, we would quote the R260 with 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB depending on workload. A file and domain server may run well at 32GB. A branch server with two or three VMs should usually start at 64GB. If the server is expected to run backup, application, and database services together, 128GB gives headroom.

Storage: small chassis, proper drive choices

Storage is where the R260 has to be quoted carefully. The chassis is compact, so bay choice matters.

The 3.5-inch configuration supports up to 2 drives. This is useful when the customer wants larger capacity SATA or SAS drives for a small file server, backup target, or local archive. It keeps the configuration simple. Two drives normally means RAID 1 for mirrored protection.

The 2.5-inch configuration supports up to 6 drives. This gives more flexibility for SSD-based builds, SAS performance drives, or RAID layouts that need more than two disks. For application servers and virtual machines, 2.5-inch SSDs are usually the cleaner answer.

Selected configurations also support 4x 2.5-inch drives plus 2x direct-attach NVMe drives. That can make sense when the operating system and application storage need separate performance tiers, but it should be specified properly at order stage. You do not want to discover after delivery that the backplane does not match the drive plan.

There is no rear storage on the R260. No hidden extra bay to save a bad configuration. Drive count, RAID controller, boot method, and backup plan should be decided before purchase.

OS licence not included

The PowerEdge R260 ships as server hardware. Windows Server, VMware ESXi licensing, RHEL subscriptions, SQL Server, backup software, and CALs are separate unless included in the quotation. We list licensing as a separate line item so procurement sees the full project cost before approval.

RAID options: S160, HBA355, PERC H355, PERC H755

The R260 supports Dell’s 16G storage controller options, and the correct choice depends on the drive layout.

S160 is software RAID. It can be used for entry SATA configurations where cost control matters and the workload is light. We do not normally use it for production database or virtualisation workloads unless the requirement is very specific.

HBA355i and HBA355e are host bus adapter options. These are used when drives need to be presented directly to the operating system or storage software. Good for certain backup appliances, software-defined storage designs, or special workloads where hardware RAID is not wanted.

PERC H355 is the entry hardware RAID controller. It supports common RAID levels such as RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10. It is a sensible choice for simple mirrored or striped configurations where cache is not required.

PERC H755 is the stronger option. It supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60 with 8GB NV cache. If the R260 is carrying production data, multiple drives, or a workload where write behaviour matters, this is usually the controller we discuss first.

RAID is not backup

RAID keeps a server running through some drive failures. It does not protect against deleted files, ransomware, database corruption, fire, theft, or a bad update. For Dubai branch sites, we usually pair the R260 with local backup plus offsite or cloud replication.

iDRAC9 remote management

iDRAC9 is one of the main reasons to buy a real server instead of a high-end desktop placed in a rack shelf.

The R260 includes iDRAC9 with Lifecycle Controller. iDRAC runs independently from the operating system. If Windows hangs, Linux fails to boot, or VMware shows a hardware alert, iDRAC can still respond through its own management path. You can check hardware health, view logs, update firmware, mount installation media, power-cycle the server, and troubleshoot without standing in front of the rack.

For UAE branch environments, this is not a minor feature. A server may be sitting in a Fujairah retail branch while the IT manager is in Dubai. Or in a Ras Al Khaimah warehouse where there is no technical person on site. iDRAC9 can turn a full site visit into a remote fix, or at least tell us exactly what part needs to be carried before the engineer leaves.

Dell’s OpenManage tools also matter when you have more than one server. Firmware levels, service tags, health alerts, and hardware inventory become easier to track. That helps when a customer has R260 units in multiple branches and one central IT contact handling everything through WhatsApp, VPN, or a managed service contract.

Vector Digital Systems configures iDRAC as part of standard server handover. IP address, credentials, alert email, firmware baseline, remote access route, and admin documentation. Many servers ship with iDRAC and never get configured correctly. That is wasted value. We don’t leave it like that.

Where the R260 fits in Dubai infrastructure

In a Dubai retail branch, the R260 can sit in the same shallow rack as the firewall, switch, UPS, and CCTV network gear. It can run local POS support services, file shares, authentication, and a backup agent. The branch keeps working even when the WAN link has a bad afternoon.

In a clinic, it can run a local application server, Active Directory, print services, and a small database workload. The short-depth chassis is easier to fit into the type of cabinet usually installed inside clinic admin areas.

In hospitality, it works for smaller hotel and serviced-apartment sites where the front office, accounts, and property systems need local compute. Not a full data centre server. A proper local server.

In JAFZA, DAFZA, Al Quoz, DIP, or warehouse offices, the R260 can handle domain, file, print, backup, and light application roles without taking half the rack depth. These sites often have practical constraints: dust, limited cooling, shared electrical circuits, compact UPS units, and cabinets installed before IT was consulted.

That is the R260 use case. Real infrastructure. Small footprint. Dell management. No drama.

Power and cooling: sized for small sites

The PowerEdge R260 uses non-redundant power supply options. Dell lists 450W Platinum 100–240VAC and 700W Titanium 200–240VAC or 240VDC options depending on configuration.

That matters. This is not a dual-PSU high-availability platform. The R260 is built for cost-controlled edge and SMB sites where the practical design is: one server, one UPS, clean cabling, good airflow, Dell warranty, and a realistic backup plan.

For branch sites in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, or Abu Dhabi, we usually review three things before quoting: rack depth, UPS capacity, and cooling. A short-depth server can still fail early if it is placed in a closed wooden cabinet with no exhaust path. We check this before installation. Especially in retail and clinic deployments where the server rack sits near printers, CCTV gear, dust, and people opening the cabinet door every day.

Air cooling is standard, with up to six cabled fans depending on the build. For most R260 workloads, the heat load is manageable. The issue is not the server. It is the room. Dubai summer heat, weak AC, blocked rear doors, and overloaded UPS units cause more problems than the CPU itself.

Grey market warning for PowerEdge buyers in UAE

Not every Dell PowerEdge server sold online in the UAE comes through the authorised channel. That risk is easy to miss because the box may look correct, the service tag may exist, and the server may boot normally on day one.

The problem appears later. Firmware updates. Warranty claims. Service-tag region. Dell support entitlement. Replacement parts. A low online price can become expensive when the server fails during payroll, clinic hours, hotel check-in, or retail billing.

Dell warranty is tied to the service tag. When the server is supplied through an authorised Dell Technologies partner, the service tag should validate with the correct product, region, warranty start date, and support level. When hardware is imported outside the authorised channel, the tag may show another region, missing support, expired coverage, or a mismatch between invoice and Dell record.

Vector Digital Systems checks the service tag and warranty path before delivery. We supply the R260 through authorised Dell distribution, configure it before handover, and provide Dell warranty options that make sense for UAE sites. For production use, 3-year ProSupport is usually the practical baseline.

Do not buy only by CPU/RAM/HDD line item

For the R260, the chassis type, drive bay layout, RAID controller, PSU, warranty level, iDRAC licence, rails, OS licence, and rack depth matter. Two quotes with the same processor and memory can still be very different servers.

What Vector Digital Systems provides with the R260

Authorised Dell Technologies partner supply. Vector Digital Systems has operated in Dubai since 2009. We supply Dell PowerEdge servers through the authorised channel, with service-tag validation and Dell warranty options.

Configuration before delivery. We confirm the processor, memory, drive bay layout, RAID controller, boot method, power supply, rails, and warranty before invoicing. For a short-depth server, this matters because changes after delivery are not always simple.

RAID and firmware setup. We configure RAID, update firmware to the approved baseline, check iDRAC health, and prepare the server for OS installation. PERC H355, H755, HBA355i, and S160 choices are matched to the workload.

Rack deployment across all 7 emirates. Installation is a standard VDS service. We rack the R260, fit rails, check airflow, dress cables, connect network and power, and coordinate OS or application handover. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain.

iDRAC9 handover. We set iDRAC IP, admin access, alerts, and documentation. For branch sites connected over Etisalat or du, we can coordinate secure remote support access with your firewall or VPN design.

Dell warranty options. Dell Basic, ProSupport, and ProSupport Plus are available for 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year terms depending on project requirement. For production sites, 3-year ProSupport with next-business-day onsite support is the usual starting point.

AMC after warranty or alongside it. Annual maintenance can cover firmware planning, hardware health checks, iDRAC review, backup verification, and onsite response. Useful when the R260 is installed at a branch where no IT engineer is based.

Price and availability in Dubai

We do not publish a fixed AED price for the Dell PowerEdge R260 because the final cost changes with processor, memory, drive count, SSD or HDD choice, RAID controller, iDRAC licence, rails, OS licence, and warranty level.

A 2-drive Xeon E-2414 file server for a small office is not the same quote as a 6-drive SSD build with PERC H755, 128GB DDR5, Windows Server, CALs, rack installation, and 3-year ProSupport.

Send us the workload, user count, rack depth, location, and whether you need installation. We quote the correct configuration. No fixed online server price that later grows once the real parts are added.
