STORAGE STRATEGY · 2026

Your storage strategy needs to work whether the internet does or not

A lot of Dubai businesses built their data strategy around cloud services. Files in OneDrive. Backups in AWS. Email in Office 365. That made complete sense — until the moment it stopped working and nobody could access anything.

Cloud services have SLA agreements. Those agreements have force majeure clauses. When infrastructure fails for reasons outside a provider's control, they are not liable. Your data may be safe. Your access to it may not be.

On-premise NAS does not replace cloud. It gives you a layer of storage that runs independently of it. When your office network works, your team works — regardless of what is happening outside your building.

The storage thinking that's shifted
BEFORE
"Cloud is always available. Why maintain hardware?"
NOW
"Cloud is one layer. Local storage is the foundation."
BEFORE
"Disaster recovery means cloud backup."
NOW
"What if the cloud is the thing that needs recovering from?"
BEFORE
"One location. One cloud account."
NOW
"Data in Dubai. Live copy in a second location. No cloud in between."
ON-PREMISE NAS · WHAT IT MEANS

Your data. Your hardware. Your building.

A NAS — Network Attached Storage — is a dedicated device with hard drives inside, connected to your office network. Every computer and device on that network can read, write, and back up to it. No internet required for local access.

🏢
Physical possession of your data
The drives are in your office. You can see them, hold them, and move them. No third party holds your data on your behalf.
Fast. Local network speeds are not internet speeds.
Transferring a 10GB file locally takes seconds. Over a cloud connection, minutes. For design files, CAD, video, or large databases — the speed difference changes how your team works.
🔒
No subscription. No per-user fee. No surprise invoice.
Cloud storage charges per GB, per user, per month. A NAS is a one-time hardware cost with no ongoing fee beyond electricity. Most SMEs recover the cost within 18 months.
🛡️
Your SLA is your hardware, not someone else's uptime
RAID configurations mean a drive can fail completely without data loss. Your data stays available while you replace the failed drive — no downtime, no support ticket.
Quick comparison
Local file access speed 100–1000 MB/s

TWO LOCATIONS · ZERO CLOUD

Your data in Dubai. A live copy wherever your business extends.

Synology and QNAP NAS devices can replicate data directly to a second NAS in another location — without a cloud service in between. Dubai office to Abu Dhabi branch. Head office to warehouse. UAE to your GCC or Africa operation.

The two devices communicate directly over an encrypted connection. Changes made in Dubai appear at the second location within minutes. If access to the Dubai office is disrupted for any reason, the second location has a current copy of everything.

This is not cloud backup with a different interface. There is no third party holding your data. No subscription. No data centre you've never visited. Two boxes, both yours, always in sync.

NAS-to-NAS replication — Primary NAS at Dubai office syncs live to Secondary NAS at second location. Encrypted transfer, no cloud dependency. On-premise offsite data storage Dubai UAE.
How Vector Digital Systems sets this up
1
We assess both locations
Internet connection quality at each site determines replication mode — real-time or scheduled. We design the setup around your actual bandwidth, not a best-case scenario.
2
We supply both NAS units
Same brand on both ends for maximum compatibility. Sized to your storage requirement plus 40% headroom for growth. Drives selected for 24/7 NAS workload — WD Red or Seagate IronWolf.
3
Initial data seed is done locally
For large datasets, we configure the units together before installation so the first full sync does not consume weeks of WAN bandwidth. Only changes replicate after that.
4
Installation at both ends
We install, configure, and verify replication at each location. UAE sites handled directly. MEA export locations receive pre-configured units with remote setup support.
5
Handover and team walkthrough
Your team knows how to access data, check replication status, and what to do if a drive alerts. No ongoing dependency on us for day-to-day operations.
INSTALLATION · CONFIGURATION · HANDOVER

Buying the hardware is the easy part. Getting it right is the other part.

A NAS out of the box is a device with drives. A NAS properly configured is a business continuity system. RAID level selection, user access controls, backup schedules, replication tasks, snapshot policies — each decision affects how your data is protected and how fast you recover if something goes wrong.

Vector Digital Systems configures every unit to your specific environment. We have been installing storage and network infrastructure across Dubai since 2009. We do not hand you a box and a manual.

Drives included: All NAS units are supplied with WD Red Pro, Seagate IronWolf, or Toshiba N300 drives — rated for 24/7 NAS workload. Drive specification included in every quote.
Working hours: Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Installation slots booked in advance. WhatsApp response typically within 2 hours during working hours.
1
Site and requirements review
We ask about team size, current data volume, growth plans, existing network, and any specific compliance or access-control needs. Takes 20 minutes.
2
Hardware recommendation and quote
We specify the NAS model, number of bays, drive type, capacity, and any networking upgrades required. Quote in AED including installation. No hidden costs.
3
Installation and configuration
Our engineers install the unit, configure RAID, set up user shares and access permissions, schedule backups, and verify everything is running before they leave.
4
Team handover
We walk your team through daily use, show you how to check storage health and backup status, and leave you with documentation of your configuration.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions businesses ask before buying a NAS

Real questions from Dubai and UAE businesses — answered directly.

OneDrive and SharePoint are excellent collaboration tools. A NAS is not a replacement — it is a foundation layer that works independently of Microsoft's infrastructure. If your Office 365 subscription lapses, your IT admin account is compromised, or Microsoft experiences a regional outage, your NAS continues operating normally. Many businesses use NAS as the on-site backup target for their Microsoft 365 environment rather than relying solely on Microsoft's own retention policies. Synology's Active Backup for Business does this automatically.
Yes. Both Synology and QNAP offer secure remote access through their own relay services — Synology QuickConnect and QNAP myQNAPcloud — without requiring technical VPN configuration. UGREEN offers similar functionality through UGOS. Your team accesses the NAS from home, a hotel, or another country using a web browser or mobile app. The experience is similar to OneDrive but the data lives in your office, not in a third-party data centre.
With a RAID-configured NAS — which we set up as standard — a single drive failure does not mean data loss. The system continues operating normally and alerts you to the failed drive. You replace the drive and the system rebuilds automatically. We recommend WD Red Pro or Seagate IronWolf NAS drives, which are rated for continuous 24/7 operation and include health monitoring tools that warn you before a drive fails rather than after. We also configure a second NAS or cloud target as a backup of your NAS, following the 3-2-1 strategy.
Synology uses Snapshot Replication and QNAP uses RTRR — both allow one NAS to automatically replicate data to a second NAS at a different location over your regular internet connection. Only changed data is transferred after the initial sync, so a 100 Mbps business internet connection at each site is sufficient for most SME data volumes. For very large datasets, we seed the initial data locally before deployment to avoid saturating your connection. The two NAS devices communicate directly over an encrypted channel — no third-party cloud service is involved in the transfer.
NAS pricing in the UAE varies significantly depending on brand, configuration, number of bays, and current market availability — prices can fluctuate based on stock levels and supply. A complete solution — chassis, drives, and installation — is quoted as a package specific to your storage requirement and team size. Entry-level 2-bay units for small offices sit at a different price point than 8-bay enterprise rackmount systems. Contact us on WhatsApp with your approximate data volume and number of users and we will quote a complete solution within the same working day.
Yes — modern NAS systems from Synology and QNAP include immutable snapshots, also called WORM (Write Once, Read Many) backups. These point-in-time copies of your data cannot be modified or deleted even if ransomware gains access to your network and even if it compromises admin credentials. Recovery from a ransomware event becomes a matter of restoring from the most recent clean snapshot — a process that takes minutes rather than days. This is one of the most effective ransomware protections available to SMEs without enterprise-level infrastructure spending.
Synology is the safest choice for most businesses — its DSM operating system is the most mature, most user-friendly, and has the longest support lifecycle. QNAP suits businesses with specific performance requirements, virtualisation needs, or teams that have IT staff comfortable with more advanced configuration. UGREEN NASync is the strongest value option in 2026 — better hardware specifications per dirham than comparable Synology models, with a growing software ecosystem. We assess your team size, existing network, technical capacity, and growth plans before recommending. There is no single right answer.
We install directly across all seven UAE emirates — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain — as well as DMCC, DIFC, and JLT free zones. For MEA export, we ship pre-configured NAS units to businesses in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, and across Africa including Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and over 43 countries. Remote setup support is provided for export destinations. For two-location replication where the second location is outside UAE, we handle the UAE installation directly and support the second unit remotely.
A single NAS installation — hardware, RAID configuration, network connection, user setup, and basic backup scheduling — takes 3 to 5 hours on-site. If data migration from existing storage is required, additional time is scheduled. Two-location replication setups are typically completed across two site visits. We confirm the exact schedule during the quotation process. Installation is available Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, across all emirates.

A NAS without battery protection is vulnerable to data corruption if power is interrupted while files are being written — whether from a voltage surge, an accidental disconnection, building maintenance work, or an internal electrical fault. The RAID array protects against drive failure but not against incomplete write operations caused by sudden power loss. The answer is a UPS — Uninterruptible Power Supply — connected between your power supply and the NAS. When voltage drops or power is interrupted, the UPS gives the NAS enough time to complete pending writes and shut down cleanly. All three brands we supply — Synology, QNAP and UGREEN — include UPS monitoring software that communicates directly with the UPS unit. When the UPS detects a power event, the NAS initiates a safe shutdown sequence automatically with no manual intervention required. For businesses running 24/7 operations or storing critical financial and operational data, a UPS alongside the NAS is part of a complete installation. Vector Digital Systems supplies and installs UPS units alongside NAS hardware as part of a combined storage setup.
Simultaneous user capacity depends on the NAS model, network speed, and type of work being done. As a practical guide for Dubai office environments: a 2-bay desktop NAS on a standard Gigabit network comfortably supports 5 to 10 concurrent users doing general file access, document editing and backups. A 4-bay mid-range NAS on Gigabit handles 20 to 30 concurrent users reliably. An 8-bay or rackmount NAS with 2.5GbE or 10GbE networking handles 50 to 100 or more concurrent users depending on workload. In most offices the limiting factor is not the NAS itself but the network switch. If your team is growing, upgrading to a 2.5GbE or 10GbE switch often makes a more noticeable difference than upgrading the NAS. We assess your current network infrastructure as part of every NAS consultation and flag bottlenecks before they become a problem after installation.
Yes — and it is one of the most practical use cases for a NAS in a Dubai business that already runs IP cameras. Both QNAP and Synology include dedicated surveillance management software built into the NAS operating system at no extra cost for a small number of camera channels. QNAP's QVR Pro and Synology's Surveillance Station allow the NAS to act as a Network Video Recorder, storing IP camera footage directly to the drives while simultaneously serving as the office file server. Camera footage and business files are stored in separate isolated volumes — the cameras never affect file sharing performance and file activity never disrupts recording continuity. For a business with 4 to 16 IP cameras and a standard office team, a single 4-bay or 6-bay NAS can handle both workloads. Businesses with 20 or more cameras benefit from a dedicated NAS for surveillance with a separate unit for file sharing. Vector Digital Systems supplies and installs both NAS and IP camera systems and can design a combined storage and surveillance solution from one consultation.
