Synology NAS Dubai — Supplied, Installed and Configured by Engineers Who Know DSM
You've chosen Synology. Good call — DSM is the most mature NAS operating system on the market and it shows in every setup. What most buyers don't find out until after delivery is that a Synology shipped in a box and a Synology configured by an engineer are two completely different things. The file system, the RAID level, Active Backup, Snapshot Replication, user permissions, monitoring — none of that comes ready. Vector Digital Systems supplies, configures and installs Synology NAS systems across all seven UAE emirates, with the DSM setup done right the first time. Since 2009.
- DS925+ and DS1825+ — current 2025 models
- DSM 7.3 — Btrfs, RAID, shares, monitoring
- Active Backup — PCs, servers, Microsoft 365
- Snapshot Replication — NAS-to-NAS, two locations
- Drive supply — WD Red Pro, Seagate IronWolf, Toshiba N300
- All 7 UAE emirates — 2–4 hour site visit
- MEA export — 43 countries
Synology Wins on Software. The Hardware Is Solid. Let’s Be Honest About Both.
Most Synology buyers make the right call, but for the wrong reasons. They’ve heard it’s reliable. That it’s popular. That IT people trust it. All of that is true — but the real reason Synology earns the loyalty of IT managers across the UAE is the DSM operating system. It has been developed and refined for over fifteen years. Every backup tool, every replication feature, every monitoring alert inside DSM has been stress-tested by hundreds of thousands of businesses. The software is not going anywhere, it is not going to change ownership, and it is not going to drop a feature you’ve built your backup strategy around.
The hardware is a different conversation. The current flagship 4-bay model — the DS925+ — runs an AMD Ryzen V1500B processor and dual 2.5GbE networking. It is not the fastest NAS hardware on the market at its price point. UGREEN’s hardware is faster. QNAP’s hardware gives more expansion options. But for a Dubai office that wants a NAS that just works, managed by people who can open a browser and not a command line, that will be running reliably in five years with no surprises — Synology is the answer. When you’re choosing between the best software on mid-range hardware versus best hardware on good software, the software wins. Every time. Because software is what you interact with every single day.
Which Synology NAS Is Right for Your Office?
The current Synology DiskStation lineup for business offices runs from 2-bay units for small teams to 8-bay and rackmount systems for larger operations. Here is the honest picture on each model VDS supplies and installs in Dubai.
Two to eight users. The professional starting point — not consumer, not home office.
The DS723+ is the entry point for professional NAS use with full DSM support and Btrfs file system. Two drive bays give you between 4TB and 32TB of usable RAID 1 storage. Two built-in M.2 NVMe slots for SSD caching noticeably speed up file access on spinning drives without replacing them.
Note: Intel J4125 processor is not fast enough for running surveillance cameras alongside file sharing at scale. For camera workloads, DS925+ is the minimum.
| Processor | Intel Celeron J4125, Quad-Core 2.0 GHz (burst 2.7 GHz) |
| RAM | 2GB DDR4, upgradeable to 6GB |
| Drive bays | 2 × 3.5" or 2.5" SATA |
| M.2 slots | 2 × M.2 2280 NVMe (cache or pool) |
| Network | Dual 1GbE (not 2.5GbE) |
| Max capacity | 32TB raw (2 × 16TB drives) |
| Warranty | 3 years |
Five to thirty users. The model VDS installs most often in Dubai offices.
The DS925+ is Synology’s 2025 flagship 4-bay — the model that replaced the DS923+ and addressed performance complaints about the previous Intel J4125 processor. The AMD Ryzen V1500B is meaningfully faster for multi-task workloads — running Active Backup, file sharing, and Surveillance Station simultaneously without the system slowing down.
Four drive bays, dual 2.5GbE networking, two M.2 NVMe slots for SSD caching, expandable to nine bays via the DX525 unit. This is the NAS for the Dubai office that has outgrown a shared drive and needs a professionally managed system with proper backup and optional second-site replication.
No PCIe slot. 10GbE cannot be added — the DS925+ is limited to 2.5GbE maximum. If 10GbE is a hard requirement, mention it when requesting a quote — we’ll specify the right unit.
| Processor | AMD Ryzen V1500B, Quad-Core, 2.2 GHz |
| RAM | 4GB DDR4 ECC, upgradeable to 32GB |
| Drive bays | 4 × 3.5" or 2.5" SATA (hot-swap) |
| M.2 slots | 2 × M.2 2280 NVMe (cache or pool) |
| Network | Dual 2.5GbE, link aggregation |
| Expansion | DX525 via USB-C → 9 bays total |
| Read / Write | 522 MB/s / 565 MB/s |
| Max raw | 96TB (4 × 24TB) · 216TB with DX525 |
| Power | 39.44W access / 9.98W HDD hibernation |
| Noise | 20.0 dB(A) — very quiet |
| Warranty | 3 years |
Thirty users or more. Or any office combining CCTV footage with file sharing at scale.
Eight bays give you between 16TB and 192TB of usable RAID 5 storage without an expansion unit — enough for several years of data growth. The DS1825+ has a PCIe expansion slot, unlike the DS925+, meaning a 10GbE network card can be installed for offices with 10GbE switch infrastructure.
| Processor | AMD Ryzen V1500B, Quad-Core, 2.2 GHz |
| RAM | 4GB DDR4 ECC, upgradeable to 32GB |
| Drive bays | 8 × 3.5" or 2.5" SATA (hot-swap) |
| M.2 slots | 2 × M.2 2280 NVMe |
| Network | Dual 1GbE built-in + PCIe for 10GbE |
| PCIe | 1 × PCIe 3.0 x8 (10GbE expansion) |
| Max raw | 192TB raw (8 × 24TB drives) |
| Warranty | 3 years |
Synology RS-series rackmounts — RS1225+ (12-bay) and RS2425+ (24-bay) — go into server rooms, not under desks. VDS supplies and installs RS-series units. If your requirement is rackmount, WhatsApp us with the spec and we’ll build the quote.
The DX525 is Synology’s 5-bay expansion unit connecting to the DS925+ via USB-C, extending from 4 to 9 bays and capacity up to 216TB raw. It adds bays only — the DS925+ handles all processing. VDS supplies and installs the DX525 as part of a complete storage quote when the office has clear capacity growth plans.

DSM 7.3 — What Every Feature Actually Does for Your Office
Most NAS suppliers list Synology features as bullet points and stop there. Here is what each one means for a Dubai business in practice — from someone who configures these systems, not someone who copy-pasted the spec sheet.
Your Entire Office Backed Up. No Per-Device Fees.
Every computer in your office generates data. Sales records, project files, client emails, CAD drawings, accounting databases. If a laptop dies, an employee accidentally deletes a folder, or a server corrupts — the question is how quickly you can get back to the moment before it happened.
Active Backup for Business is a free Synology package that backs up every Windows PC, Mac, file server and virtual machine on your office network to the NAS. Free means no per-device licensing, no per-seat subscription, no annual renewal. One NAS. The entire office covered.
Changed Block Tracking means after the first full backup, only what has changed is transferred. A laptop that changed 200MB of files since yesterday sends 200MB — not the entire 500GB drive. Backups run in the background, scheduled outside business hours, without affecting the user’s working speed.
- Physical Windows machines — full system backup, not just files. The entire OS state is recoverable.
- Physical Mac machines — file-level backup with version history.
- VMware vSphere and ESXi — virtual machine snapshots to the NAS on schedule.
- Microsoft Hyper-V — application-consistent VM backup with Synology Storage Console integration.
- Synology applications — internal DSM packages included in system backup.
- Single file or folder — recovered in minutes from any backup point.
- Full system restore — bare-metal recovery to new hardware if the original device is gone.
- VM instant restore — run a VM directly from backup storage while the original is rebuilt.
Your Mailboxes, OneDrive and Teams. On Your Hardware.
Microsoft’s own service-level agreement states they are not responsible for user data loss. If an employee deletes their inbox, if ransomware wipes your SharePoint libraries, if an account is accidentally removed — recovery depends on Microsoft’s retention windows, which are limited and not guaranteed. Your data is stored on Microsoft’s infrastructure under their terms. It is not backed up by anyone else unless you arrange it.
Active Backup for Microsoft 365 is a free Synology package that pulls a local copy of your entire Microsoft 365 environment to your NAS every time a backup runs. The copy sits on hardware in your office. It is yours. It does not expire. It is not metered.
- Exchange Online — every email, attachment, contact, calendar and folder per user, going back to the start of your subscription.
- OneDrive for Business — all files, metadata and sharing permissions including version history.
- SharePoint Online — document libraries, lists and site collections.
- Microsoft Teams — channel posts, team settings, and files shared within channels via SharePoint.
- Unlimited accounts — the only limit is the storage capacity of your NAS.
- Unlimited retention — no 90-day window, no rolling deletion.
- Self-service recovery portal — individual users restore their own emails and files without IT assistance.
- Auto-discovery — new Microsoft 365 accounts, SharePoint sites and Teams are automatically added to backup tasks.
- Block-level deduplication — identical content across users stored once, significantly reducing storage requirements.
VDS authenticates against your Azure AD tenant, configures the backup task for Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, and confirms the first backup has completed — all as part of the standard installation.
The Feature That Requires Btrfs — and Why That Matters More Than You Think
Snapshot Replication creates point-in-time copies of your shared folders at intervals as short as five minutes. Every snapshot is a frozen record of your data at that exact moment. If a user accidentally overwrites a critical file, or ransomware encrypts your shared folders, an administrator can restore the affected files to any snapshot point. Recovery takes seconds — the snapshot is the data at that moment.
- Primary NAS in your Dubai office holds live working data. Snapshot Replication sends encrypted copies of changed data to a second Synology at another location over your internet connection.
- Only changed data blocks are transferred after initial setup — bandwidth-efficient over a standard business connection.
- If the Dubai NAS fails, your team switches to the replica. Data loss is limited to the interval since the last replication — as low as five minutes.
- VDS installs and configures both units — the Dubai primary and the remote replica — as a working two-site system from one engagement.
- Snapshot Replication — five-minute RPO, second-level restoration, fast local and near-site recovery. When speed matters.
- Hyper Backup — compressed, encrypted archives to cloud (C2, S3, Azure), external drives or FTP. When portability and offsite archival matter.
- The right setup uses both: Snapshot for fast recovery, Hyper Backup for the catastrophic event where getting the data back at all is the only goal.
What Changed in DSM 7.3 — and What It Means for Business Buyers
Synology Tiering — automatic storage tiering. The NAS monitors which files are accessed frequently and moves inactive files to lower-cost storage while keeping active files on faster storage. For offices with both SSD cache and HDD storage, the files your team uses every day serve from the fast tier automatically.
Synology AI Console — deployed across 430,000 Synology systems since August 2025. On-premises AI collaboration without sending your business data to a cloud provider. DSM 7.3 added data masking before any third-party AI call — sensitive fields are filtered locally before leaving the NAS. For Dubai businesses in finance, legal, or any sector where data residency matters, on-premises AI is significant.
- Security — 50+ patches in 12 months. DSM 7.3 adds KEV, EPSS and LEV risk indicators so patches are prioritised by actual exploitation risk, not severity alone.
- Synology Drive now supports shared labels, file locking (prevent two users overwriting the same file), and streamlined file requests from external parties.
- MailPlus — email moderation and domain sharing added, useful for organisations running multiple domain identities.
- Drive compatibility reversal — 2025 model-year DiskStation Plus, Value and J Series now support third-party SATA drives for storage pool creation. M.2 still requires drives on the HCL.
Third-Party Drives, Synology’s Policy Reversal, and What VDS Installs
If you’ve researched the DS925+ online, you’ve read about Synology’s drive compatibility controversy. Here is the plain version.
In early 2025, Synology announced that new 2025-model NAS units would require certified Synology-branded drives for full feature support. Non-certified drives could still be installed but would generate warnings and lose access to IronWolf Health Management integration. This caused significant pushback from buyers who had built their NAS strategy around third-party drives.
In October 2025, with the release of DSM 7.3, Synology reversed the SATA drive restriction for 2025 model-year DiskStation Plus, Value and J Series. Third-party SATA hard drives can now be installed and used to create storage pools without feature penalties.
What VDS Does On-Site — From Delivery to Handover
A Synology NAS out of the box is a piece of hardware. A Synology NAS after a VDS installation is a working system.
