Description

APC Smart-UPS SRT8KXLI Dubai

When the server stays on but the power doesn’t

The mains drops for three seconds. Or the generator handover is rough. Or the building DB trips on a Thursday afternoon while the accounts team is closing invoices, the firewall is still routing traffic, and the storage box is serving files to twenty users.

That’s when the UPS stops being a box in the corner.

For a Dubai server room, a UPS is not only about backup time. It’s about clean power, zero transfer time, controlled shutdown, battery health, heat output, network alerts, and whether the electrician wired the input correctly before the rack went live. A small line-interactive unit can keep a desktop running. It is not the answer for an 8kW IT load with servers, switches, storage, firewalls and CCTV recording equipment on the same rack.

The APC Smart-UPS SRT8KXLI is built for that higher-load room. It is an 8kVA / 8kW online double-conversion UPS with pure sine wave output, hardwired input, IEC output sockets, embedded network management and extended-runtime battery support. The kind of UPS you specify when the load matters and the shutdown sequence must be planned, not improvised.

8kW UPS sizing note

The SRT8KXLI is rated at 8000VA and 8000W. That matters. Some UPS models show a high VA rating but lower watt output. This model gives the full 8kW usable power rating, subject to proper input wiring, load balance, battery condition and installation environment.

What the APC SRT8KXLI is built for

The SRT8KXLI sits in the APC Smart-UPS SRT online range. It is not a desktop UPS. It is not the small unit under a reception PC. It is a high-density UPS for IT rooms where the load includes production equipment and where the power path needs to stay clean during dips, spikes, swells and outages.

The buyer profile is usually clear.

A company in JAFZA has two Dell PowerEdge servers, a storage appliance, firewall pair, core switch and CCTV NVR in the same rack. A clinic in Dubai needs uptime for patient records, call recording and network access. A trading office in Business Bay has no patience for a server crash every time the building power moves from mains to generator. A hotel back office in Deira runs PMS, accounting, CCTV and IP telephony from one small server room. Not a data centre. Still critical.

For these rooms, the UPS has to do more than hold power for a few minutes. It has to feed the load continuously through its inverter, report battery and input events over the network, support graceful shutdown, and give the IT team time to act before batteries are exhausted.

That is the reason to choose an online UPS at this capacity. With double conversion, incoming AC is converted to DC and then back to AC. The connected IT load receives inverter-fed power during normal operation. When the mains fails, there is no relay handover delay for the load to ride through. For servers, storage controllers, network cores and voice/data equipment, that clean handover is the point.

Online UPS vs basic backup UPS

A basic UPS waits for mains trouble before switching to battery output. An online double-conversion UPS feeds the load through its inverter all the time. That is why the SRT8KXLI is a better fit for server rooms, storage, firewall stacks and network racks where unstable power can corrupt data or bring down services.

The 8kW rating is the first thing to check

A UPS quote should start with the load, not the model number. The SRT8KXLI gives 8000VA and 8000W. That unity power factor helps when sizing for modern IT equipment, because most server-room loads are measured in watts, not just VA.

That does not mean every 8kW load should be placed on one 8kW UPS. Real installations need headroom. A server room running at 7.8kW today leaves no room for inrush, future servers, an added switch, another firewall, or battery ageing. For production IT, we normally size with spare capacity so the UPS is not operating permanently at the edge of its rating.

For a Dubai office, this matters even more because server-room cooling is often shared with office AC. A UPS releasing 1497 Btu/h into a small IT room adds heat. If that room already has a Dell rack, PoE switches, CCTV NVRs and firewall appliances, the cooling load must be checked before the UPS is installed. Power protection and cooling are part of the same conversation.

Electrical work required

The SRT8KXLI uses hardwired input. It is not a plug-and-play desktop UPS. Site wiring, breaker rating, phase availability, earthing and load distribution must be checked before installation. Vector Digital Systems can coordinate the UPS deployment with your electrician or facilities team.

Input, output and socket planning

The SRT8KXLI supports 230V input and 400V three-phase input options. On many UAE sites, especially warehouses, clinics, villas converted to offices, JAFZA units and mixed-use commercial buildings, the available supply is not always what the IT team assumes. Some rooms have single-phase available. Some have three-phase at the DB but not terminated near the rack. Some have the UPS point installed years ago for a smaller unit and never upgraded.

This is why we ask for site photos before quoting installation: DB label, breaker size, cable route, UPS location, rack location and available floor space. The UPS weighs 111.82 kg, so it also needs a stable placement area. If rack mounting is required, the rail kit must be included separately and the rack must support the installed weight.

On the output side, the SRT8KXLI provides 6 IEC C13 outlets and 4 IEC C19 outlets, plus IEC jumper cables. That is suitable for server-room equipment, but the final layout still needs planning. Servers may need C13 or C19 depending on PSU rating. High-capacity PDUs may use C19 input. Switches, NVRs and firewall appliances may require IEC or local plug conversion through proper rack PDUs.

Do not run a critical rack from loose adapters and extension strips. The UPS is only one part of the power chain. The PDU, cable rating, outlet loading and labeling all need to be done properly, especially where Etisalat or du circuits, firewall HA pairs and storage are sitting in the same rack.

Battery runtime and external battery packs

Runtime depends on load. A UPS carrying 2kW will run longer than the same UPS carrying 7kW. That sounds obvious, but many bad UPS purchases happen because the buyer asks for “30 minutes backup” without sharing the actual load in watts.

For the SRT8KXLI, we normally ask for one of three inputs: measured rack load from an existing UPS, nameplate wattage for every device, or a live site inspection. Measured load is best. Nameplate wattage is safer than guessing, but usually higher than real consumption. A site inspection is useful when the rack has mixed equipment: servers, SAN, NAS, PoE switches, CCTV recording, IP PBX, modem/router, firewall, KVM and monitor.

The UPS supports extended runtime with external battery packs. That is the correct route when the load is high and the required backup time is longer than the internal battery can provide. For example, a server room that only needs five to ten minutes for generator handover is a different design from a room that needs thirty to sixty minutes of battery autonomy during DEWA outages or building maintenance.

Battery planning should include replacement cost as well. The replacement battery cartridge for this model is APCRBC140. Batteries age faster in hot rooms. In Dubai, a UPS placed in a warm store room or poorly ventilated IT closet will not get the same battery life as one in a properly cooled server room. Plan for battery health checks, not just first-day runtime.

Runtime quote requirement

Send the connected load in watts and the required backup time. If the load is unknown, send rack photos and equipment model numbers. We can size the UPS, external battery packs and rack PDU layout from real equipment instead of guesswork.

Network management and shutdown control

The SRT8KXLI includes embedded network management. This is a major difference between a serious server-room UPS and a basic backup box. When the UPS is on the network, the IT team can monitor input voltage, battery condition, load percentage, runtime remaining, event logs, alarms and shutdown status without standing in front of the unit.

For a Dubai business with one IT administrator covering multiple offices, this is not a small feature. If the server room is in Al Quoz and the IT person is in Abu Dhabi, the UPS must send alerts before batteries are drained. If a branch office in Sharjah loses power after hours, the UPS should report the event and begin a controlled shutdown sequence where configured.

The UPS also works with shutdown software for physical servers and virtual environments. That matters when Dell PowerEdge servers, storage and VMware or Windows Server workloads are connected. A sudden power loss can corrupt databases, damage file systems and force manual recovery. A controlled shutdown gives applications time to close cleanly before the UPS battery reaches the critical threshold.

Vector Digital Systems configures UPS network settings, alerting, access credentials and shutdown policies during deployment when requested. The hardware is only useful when it is integrated. A UPS that beeps in a locked room is not management. A UPS that sends alerts, logs events and starts the right shutdown sequence is management.

Good fit for Dell PowerEdge rooms

The SRT8KXLI is often quoted with Dell PowerEdge servers, storage, firewalls and managed switches where the rack load needs online power protection. For server purchases, see our full Dell PowerEdge range in Dubai at Dell PowerEdge server Dubai.

Where this UPS fits — and where it doesn’t

The SRT8KXLI is a good fit for small and mid-sized server rooms, network racks, storage systems, security rooms, medical lab IT loads, voice/data networks and light industrial IT equipment where 8kW of online UPS capacity is enough.

It is also a practical fit when you need longer runtime but do not want to jump into a larger three-phase UPS frame. External battery packs allow runtime to be expanded around the actual load.

It is not the right answer for every site. If the load is already near 8kW, we should size upward. If the room has multiple racks, three-phase PDUs, high-density compute, or large storage arrays, a larger UPS architecture may be cleaner. If the buyer needs only one PC and one router to survive a short outage, this model is too much.

That is why we ask for the load before quoting. The correct UPS is not the biggest one on the shelf. It is the one that matches the electrical supply, rack load, runtime target, heat output, battery plan and support requirement.

Power, cooling and physical installation

An 8kW UPS is not something to place wherever there is an empty corner. The APC SRT8KXLI weighs 111.82 kg, generates 1497 Btu/h of heat, and produces 55 dBA of acoustic noise. That is normal for this class of online UPS. It still needs planning.

For Dubai server rooms, the two common mistakes are simple: weak cooling and wrong placement. A UPS is often installed after the rack is already full. The room AC was sized for a few switches and one server, then someone adds storage, CCTV recording, firewall HA, more PoE switches and an 8kVA UPS. Suddenly the room runs hot, batteries age early, and the UPS starts reporting temperature warnings.

Battery life depends heavily on room temperature. The SRT8KXLI is rated for 0°C to 40°C operation, but that does not mean a warm IT closet is good practice. In UAE buildings, especially warehouses, clinics, school server rooms and villa offices converted to commercial use, cooling needs to be checked before deployment.

If the UPS is going into a rack, the rack must support the installed weight and the correct rail kit must be supplied. If it is going in tower position, the floor space must be stable, clear and accessible for battery replacement. Front and rear access matter. So does the cable route back to the DB and rack PDU.

Rail kit and electrical readiness

The SRT8KXLI is a tower UPS and can be rack-mounted only with the correct optional rails. It also requires hardwired input. Before delivery, confirm rack depth, floor loading, breaker rating, cable route, earthing and whether the site is using single-phase or three-phase input.

Grey market UPS warning in UAE

UPS units are often treated like simple electrical stock. That is a mistake. With APC Smart-UPS models, channel, warranty, battery age and accessories matter.

A grey market UPS may look cheaper on the first quote. Then the problems start: missing rail kit, old battery stock, unsupported warranty region, wrong input cable expectation, no local installation, no battery replacement plan, no one to configure network management, and no one to answer when the UPS goes into bypass at 11 PM.

For an 8kVA UPS, the battery condition is not a small detail. Lead-acid batteries age even when the unit is sitting unused. A box that has spent months in a hot warehouse is not the same as fresh authorised supply. The UPS may power on, but runtime may be poor and battery replacement may arrive much sooner than expected.

Vector Digital Systems supplies APC UPS systems for UAE deployments with proper model matching, site readiness checks, installation support and battery replacement planning. We don’t treat the UPS as a carton. We treat it as part of the server-room power path.

Check before approval

Before buying any SRT8KXLI, confirm the exact model number, battery condition, warranty, rail requirement, input wiring, output socket plan and whether installation is included. A low UPS price without those items can become an expensive site visit later.

What Vector Digital Systems provides

Vector Digital Systems supplies, installs and supports APC UPS systems across all 7 UAE emirates. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain. We work with server rooms, network racks, CCTV control rooms, clinic IT rooms, hotel back offices, warehouses and office infrastructure projects.

For the SRT8KXLI, we can help with load sizing, UPS selection, external battery pack planning, installation coordination, network management setup, shutdown policy configuration, rack PDU planning and battery replacement support. If the UPS is being purchased with Dell PowerEdge servers, switches, storage or firewalls, we size the UPS around the complete rack load instead of quoting blindly.

Installation is standard VDS work. That includes delivery coordination, placement, rack or tower planning, basic UPS startup, load connection guidance, management IP configuration and handover. Electrical termination must be done by a qualified electrician or site electrical team. We coordinate the IT side so the UPS is ready for production use.

For sites with Etisalat or du internet links, firewall HA, voice systems, CCTV, access control and servers in the same room, we can also map which equipment should stay on UPS and which load should be removed. Not every device deserves runtime. Critical load first. Convenience load later.

UPS deployment scope

VDS can supply the APC SRT8KXLI, optional rack rails, external battery packs, replacement APCRBC140 batteries, rack PDUs, server-room installation, UPS network configuration and AMC support. Share the load in watts and required backup time for a correct quote.

Stock and availability in Dubai

Stock & Availability: APC SRT8KXLI available in Dubai on request. Same-day quote on WhatsApp. Ready-stock and project supply options depend on current UAE availability. External battery packs, APCRBC140 replacement batteries, rack rails and rack PDUs can be quoted with the UPS. FOB Dubai pricing available for Africa, GCC and South Asia export orders.

UPS availability changes faster than server availability because battery stock, shipping rules and model movement all affect lead time. If the requirement is urgent, send the model number, quantity, delivery emirate, installation requirement and whether external battery packs are needed.

For Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi projects, we can usually advise quickly whether the better route is ready unit, configure with accessories, or quote an alternate APC Smart-UPS SRT model based on actual load.

Frequently asked questions — APC SRT8KXLI Dubai

Is the APC SRT8KXLI an online UPS?

Yes. The SRT8KXLI is an online double-conversion UPS. It feeds connected IT equipment through inverter output and is suited for servers, storage, switches, firewalls, CCTV NVRs and network racks where clean power and zero transfer time matter.

What is the output capacity of the SRT8KXLI?

The output rating is 8000VA / 8000W. That unity power factor is important for modern IT loads because server-room sizing is usually calculated in watts. We still recommend leaving headroom instead of running the UPS at full 8kW load.

Does the SRT8KXLI need hardwired input?

Yes. This is not a small plug-in UPS. It supports 230V single-phase or 400V three-phase input and requires correct electrical termination, breaker sizing, earthing and site readiness. VDS can coordinate the IT deployment with your electrical team.

Can the APC SRT8KXLI be rack mounted?

Yes, but it is supplied as a tower UPS and rack mounting needs the correct optional rail kit. The unit weighs 111.82 kg, so rack load rating, rack depth, rail kit and access for battery replacement must be checked before installation.

Which replacement battery does the SRT8KXLI use?

The replacement battery cartridge is APCRBC140. Battery life depends on room temperature, load, charging condition and age. In Dubai server rooms, we recommend planned battery checks because warm IT closets shorten battery life.

Can I add external battery packs for more runtime?

Yes. The SRT8KXLI supports external battery packs for extended runtime. Send your connected load in watts and required backup time. We will size the UPS and battery pack configuration around the real load instead of quoting a guessed runtime.

Is the SRT8KXLI suitable for Dell PowerEdge servers?

Yes, when the connected load is sized correctly. The SRT8KXLI is a good fit for racks with Dell PowerEdge servers, storage, firewall appliances, managed switches and backup equipment. For new server projects, see our Dell PowerEdge server Dubai range.
