How to size it for a Dubai server room

A 20kW UPS does not mean every site should load it to 20kW. Real UPS sizing needs margin. A safe design usually leaves headroom for startup load, future servers, battery ageing, summer room temperature, and one or two extra switches or storage shelves that procurement adds six months later.

For a server rack, we check the nameplate and real draw of each device. A Dell PowerEdge server with dual power supplies may not draw the full PSU rating. A PoE switch might draw almost nothing today, then jump after cameras, access points or IP phones are connected. Storage arrays can spike during rebuilds. Firewalls, routers and NVRs are small individually, but they still matter when you are trying to calculate runtime accurately.

Runtime is the second part. Some customers want 10 to 15 minutes because the building generator starts quickly. Some want 30 minutes because generator handover is not guaranteed. The third part is heat. A UPS at this size produces heat and fan noise. The SRTG20KXLI is 7U high and 835 mm deep. That depth matters. Many office racks in Dubai are 600 mm or 800 mm network cabinets, good for switches and patch panels but wrong for heavy UPS equipment. For rack mounting, check the cabinet depth, rail support, rear clearance, front airflow and floor loading before the unit reaches site.

The weight is 142.5 kg before you start thinking about external battery packs. That changes how the rack is loaded. UPS equipment sits low in the cabinet. Heavy batteries should never be placed at the top of a rack. In a warehouse IT room or a small office server room, the floor, rack feet, castors and cable entry point all need checking.

Electrical input is another point buyers often miss. This model supports 230V single-phase and 380–415V three-phase wiring, but that does not mean every site can use every configuration without work. Facilities may need to confirm breaker capacity, neutral sizing, earthing, isolation, generator compatibility and whether a maintenance bypass is already available.

It also fits generator-backed buildings where the UPS has to bridge the generator start window and clean up the incoming power after handover. Many offices assume generator equals protected IT power. It doesn’t. The UPS protects the load during the gap, during transfer, and during unstable input events.

It is not the right fit for a single desktop, a small CCTV cabinet, or a rack with one switch and one firewall. That kind of load belongs on a smaller APC Smart-UPS. Power, cooling and battery reality

A 20kVA UPS is part of the power chain. It should not be treated like an accessory added after the rack is full. Before ordering the APC SRTG20KXLI, check three things: available input supply, room cooling and battery runtime target.

Input supply comes first. The SRTG20KXLI supports 230V single-phase and 380–415V three-phase wiring, but the site still needs the correct breaker, cable size, neutral, earthing and isolation. Many Dubai offices have enough building capacity on paper, but the IT room DB may not be ready for a 20kW protected load. That is why we ask for DB photos and breaker details before final approval.

Cooling comes next. UPS batteries age faster in hot rooms. A server room sitting at 28–32°C because the AC is switched off after office hours will shorten battery life. Dubai summer does not forgive weak cooling design. If the UPS protects the server rack, the room should be cooled like a server room. Not like a store room.

Battery runtime is the final decision. Some sites only need time for generator handover. Some need graceful shutdown. Some need 30 minutes because facilities cannot guarantee generator start. The SRTG20KXLI can be planned around those targets, but the load list must be honest. Two Dell PowerEdge servers, one storage box and four switches are not the same load as a full PoE network rack with CCTV recording and access control.

Grey market stock may look cheaper at quote stage.
