Description

APC Smart-UPS On-Line SRTG20KXLI Dubai

When the server room can’t drop, the UPS spec matters

The air-conditioning is running hard. The DB room is warm by mid-afternoon. The firewall, core switch, storage box and Dell PowerEdge rack are all on the same power path. Then someone from facilities says the building has a planned shutdown on Friday morning.

That’s usually when the UPS conversation becomes real.

A small line-interactive unit under the rack is fine for a few switches. It is not fine for a 20kW IT load, a production server rack, or a head office where Active Directory, ERP, CCTV recording, PBX, Wi-Fi controllers and storage all sit in one room. At this size, the UPS is not a box you add at the end. It is part of the electrical design.

The APC Smart-UPS On-Line SRTG20KXLI is built for that kind of load: 20kVA / 20kW, online double-conversion, rack or tower installation, hard-wire input and output, embedded Network Management Card 3, and graceful shutdown support through PowerChute Network Shutdown. For Dubai offices, JAFZA warehouses, DAFZA operations teams, clinics, schools, hotels and small data rooms, this is the point where UPS selection needs proper sizing and installation planning.

20kVA equals 20kW on this model

The SRTG20KXLI is a unity power factor UPS. That matters because a 20kVA UPS with 0.8 power factor only gives 16kW usable output. This model gives 20kW. For a loaded server rack, that difference can decide whether the UPS is correctly sized or already overloaded on day one.

What the APC SRTG20KXLI is built for

The SRTG20KXLI sits in the 20kVA online UPS class. It is not a desktop UPS, and it is not the small rack unit you place under a single server. It is sized for a serious IT cabinet, a small server room, a network core, or a protected power zone feeding multiple racks through a proper electrical panel.

Typical UAE use case: one 42U rack in a Dubai office, with 2 to 4 rack servers, one storage array, a firewall pair, core switches, access control controller, NVR, PBX appliance, and Etisalat or du handoff equipment. Some loads must stay online during short outages. Other loads must shut down cleanly if battery runtime drops below the safe limit. The UPS must support both behaviours.

This is where online topology matters. The SRTG20KXLI continuously converts incoming AC to DC and back to AC. The connected load receives clean sine wave output even when the incoming utility supply is unstable, low, high, noisy or switching between sources. In areas where the building generator starts after a delay, or where facilities power quality is not consistent, double-conversion design protects more than just runtime. It protects the quality of power feeding the equipment.

That matters in Dubai. Not because the grid is weak. Because many IT rooms are not purpose-built data centres. Server racks are placed in office electrical rooms, warehouse mezzanines, hotel back offices, clinic admin rooms, school IT rooms and JAFZA operations offices. Cooling is often shared. Space is tight. UPS ventilation is an afterthought. At 20kW, those details are not small.

Vector Digital Systems supplies and installs APC UPS systems across all 7 UAE emirates. We size the UPS around the real load: server wattage, storage draw, switch PoE budget, runtime target, input phase availability, bypass requirement, rack depth and battery plan. Not just the number printed on a brochure.

Hard-wire UPS installation

The SRTG20KXLI is not a plug-in UPS. It needs hard-wire electrical installation, correct breaker selection, earthing, input/output wiring, and bypass planning. Do not buy this unit without checking site power, rack position, cable route, cooling and battery placement.

How to size it for a Dubai server room

A 20kW UPS does not mean every site should load it to 20kW. Real UPS sizing needs margin. A safe design usually leaves headroom for startup load, future servers, battery ageing, summer room temperature, and one or two extra switches or storage shelves that procurement adds six months later.

For a server rack, we check the nameplate and real draw of each device. A Dell PowerEdge server with dual power supplies may not draw the full PSU rating. A PoE switch might draw almost nothing today, then jump after cameras, access points or IP phones are connected. Storage arrays can spike during rebuilds. Firewalls, routers and NVRs are small individually, but they still matter when you are trying to calculate runtime accurately.

Runtime is the second part. Some customers want 10 to 15 minutes because the building generator starts quickly. Some want 30 minutes because generator handover is not guaranteed. Some want enough time for PowerChute to shut down VMware hosts, Windows servers and storage in the right order. These are different designs. Same UPS rating, different battery and shutdown plan.

The third part is heat. A UPS at this size produces heat and fan noise. The SRTG20KXLI is listed at 58 dBA, so it belongs in a server room, electrical room or IT space, not under a finance manager’s desk. In Dubai, where the outside temperature can sit around 45°C in summer, the room cooling plan affects battery life. Lead-acid batteries hate heat. A battery room sitting at 30°C plus will not age like a battery room sitting near 20–25°C.

Load sizing rule we use on site

Tell us the rack equipment list, not only the UPS size you think you need. Server model, PSU rating, storage model, firewall, switches, PoE load, NVR count, runtime target and available input power. From that, we can confirm whether 20kVA / 20kW is right or whether the site needs a smaller unit, parallel planning, or a different battery setup.

Rack, floor and electrical planning

The SRTG20KXLI is 7U high and 835 mm deep. That depth matters. Many office racks in Dubai are 600 mm or 800 mm network cabinets, good for switches and patch panels but wrong for heavy UPS equipment. For rack mounting, check the cabinet depth, rail support, rear clearance, front airflow and floor loading before the unit reaches site.

The weight is 142.5 kg before you start thinking about external battery packs. That changes how the rack is loaded. UPS equipment sits low in the cabinet. Heavy batteries should never be placed at the top of a rack. In a warehouse IT room or a small office server room, the floor, rack feet, castors and cable entry point all need checking.

Electrical input is another point buyers often miss. This model supports 230V single-phase and 380–415V three-phase wiring, but that does not mean every site can use every configuration without work. Facilities may need to confirm breaker capacity, neutral sizing, earthing, isolation, generator compatibility and whether a maintenance bypass is already available.

For sites in Business Bay, Al Quoz, JAFZA, DAFZA, DIP, Sharjah Industrial Area and Abu Dhabi, we usually ask for a DB photo, available breaker details, rack photo and load list before finalising the quote. It avoids the common problem: UPS delivered, then the electrician says the input supply is wrong.

Network Management Card 3 and PowerChute shutdown

The embedded Network Management Card 3 is one of the main reasons to choose this class of APC UPS. It lets the IT team monitor the UPS over the network instead of waiting for a beeping alarm from the server room. You can check input voltage, output load, battery status, runtime estimate, events and alerts from a browser or management platform.

For UAE companies with IT support working between sites, that matters. A team supporting a head office in Dubai, a branch in Abu Dhabi and a warehouse in Jebel Ali cannot rely on someone standing next to the rack. Remote UPS visibility is part of normal infrastructure management now, the same way iDRAC is part of Dell server management and firewall alerts are part of network support.

PowerChute Network Shutdown is the second part. If the power outage is longer than the battery runtime, the UPS can trigger clean shutdown of connected systems. That prevents the ugly version of an outage: storage cache not flushed, virtual machines dropped, domain controller corruption, SQL database recovery, and the IT team spending the weekend fixing what a clean shutdown could have avoided.

For a server room running VMware, Hyper-V, Windows Server, Linux hosts, NAS, SAN or HCI, shutdown order matters. Storage last. Application servers before database where required. Domain services with proper timing. The UPS hardware is only one part of the job. The shutdown policy is the part that saves data when battery runtime runs out.

Management setup is included in a proper UPS deployment

We configure UPS network settings, alert emails, access control, event thresholds and PowerChute shutdown where required. A UPS with a management card that nobody logs into is wasted money. It should report battery faults, overload risk, input events and runtime status before the site is already in trouble.

Where this UPS fits — and where it doesn’t

The SRTG20KXLI fits a production IT load where 10kVA is too small and a modular data centre UPS is more than the site needs. One serious server rack. A network core with PoE and storage. A small server room feeding multiple cabinets. A branch site where downtime affects billing, dispatch, customer access or security recording.

It also fits generator-backed buildings where the UPS has to bridge the generator start window and clean up the incoming power after handover. Many offices assume generator equals protected IT power. It doesn’t. The UPS protects the load during the gap, during transfer, and during unstable input events.

It is not the right fit for a single desktop, a small CCTV cabinet, or a rack with one switch and one firewall. That kind of load belongs on a smaller APC Smart-UPS. It is also not something to install into a shallow wall cabinet or an uncooled storage cupboard. Wrong space, wrong airflow, wrong service access.

Send us the load list before purchase. We’ll tell you if the APC SRTG20KXLI is the right size, if you need extra battery runtime, or if a different UPS class makes more sense for the site.

Power, cooling and battery reality

A 20kVA UPS is part of the power chain. It should not be treated like an accessory added after the rack is full. Before ordering the APC SRTG20KXLI, check three things: available input supply, room cooling and battery runtime target.

Input supply comes first. The SRTG20KXLI supports 230V single-phase and 380–415V three-phase wiring, but the site still needs the correct breaker, cable size, neutral, earthing and isolation. Many Dubai offices have enough building capacity on paper, but the IT room DB may not be ready for a 20kW protected load. That is why we ask for DB photos and breaker details before final approval.

Cooling comes next. UPS batteries age faster in hot rooms. A server room sitting at 28–32°C because the AC is switched off after office hours will shorten battery life. Dubai summer does not forgive weak cooling design. If the UPS protects the server rack, the room should be cooled like a server room. Not like a store room.

Battery runtime is the final decision. Some sites only need time for generator handover. Some need graceful shutdown. Some need 30 minutes because facilities cannot guarantee generator start. The SRTG20KXLI can be planned around those targets, but the load list must be honest. Two Dell PowerEdge servers, one storage box and four switches are not the same load as a full PoE network rack with CCTV recording and access control.

Battery life depends on room temperature

Lead-acid UPS batteries should not be left in hot, unventilated rooms. If your IT room cooling is poor, budget for earlier battery replacement. A correct UPS quote should include the UPS, battery plan, installation method and service access — not only the box price.

Grey market warning for APC UPS buyers in UAE

Not every APC UPS listed online in the UAE comes through the right channel. That matters when the unit is large, hard-wired and tied to a production load.

Grey market stock may look cheaper at quote stage. The problem usually appears later: wrong regional warranty, missing accessories, old battery stock, unsupported service route, or no clear help when the UPS throws a battery fault. With a 20kVA unit, that is not a small inconvenience. It can become downtime for the whole server room.

Check the warranty. Check the battery manufacturing age. Check whether the supplier can install, test and support the unit after delivery. A UPS this size should not be dropped at reception and left for your electrician to figure out.

Vector Digital Systems supplies APC UPS systems for UAE server rooms with configuration, installation coordination and support. We are not interested in selling a 142.5 kg UPS without knowing where it will sit, what it will feed and who will service it when the battery alarm starts two years later.

What Vector Digital Systems provides

UPS sizing — we review the connected load, server count, PoE switch budget, storage draw, firewall pair, NVRs, PBX and runtime target before confirming the APC SRTG20KXLI.

Supply and delivery — APC UPS supply across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain. Delivery planning includes weight, lift access, rack location and site access timing.

Rack or tower deployment — the SRTG20KXLI can be installed as rack or tower depending on site layout. For rack installation, we check cabinet depth, rack loading and lower-rack placement before the unit is mounted.

Electrical coordination — hard-wire input and output require proper site electrical work. We coordinate with your electrician or facilities contractor so input supply, bypass, breaker and earthing are ready before commissioning.

Network management setup — Network Management Card 3 configuration, IP settings, alert email, user access and event checks. The UPS should tell you about battery and input events before someone hears an alarm in the room.

PowerChute shutdown — graceful shutdown planning for Windows Server, VMware, Hyper-V and Linux environments where supported. We help define shutdown order for servers, storage and virtual workloads.

Battery and AMC support — battery replacement planning, APCRBC172 supply, preventive checks, UPS alarm review and annual maintenance support. For production racks, the UPS needs a maintenance plan just like the servers it protects.

Frequently asked questions — APC SRTG20KXLI Dubai

Is the APC SRTG20KXLI a 20kVA or 20kW UPS?

It is both: 20kVA and 20kW. This unity power factor rating is important because the full 20kVA capacity is usable as 20kW output. For server rooms, that makes sizing clearer than older UPS models with lower power factor.

Can this UPS run on single-phase power?

Yes, the SRTG20KXLI supports 230V single-phase and 380–415V three-phase input/output configurations. Site wiring still needs checking before purchase. The UPS is hard-wired, so breaker, cable, neutral, earthing and bypass planning must be confirmed.

Does the SRTG20KXLI include a network card?

Yes. It includes embedded Network Management Card 3. That allows browser-based UPS monitoring, event alerts, load checks, battery status review and remote management. For Dubai offices with support teams moving between sites, this is a useful part of the deployment.

What battery does this UPS use?

The listed replacement battery cartridge is APCRBC172. Actual battery planning depends on runtime target and load. For production server rooms, battery age and room temperature should be checked during maintenance because heat shortens battery service life.

Is installation included in the UPS price?

Installation depends on site conditions. Rack mounting, tower placement, network card setup and PowerChute configuration can be supplied by Vector Digital Systems. Electrical hard-wiring must be done by a qualified electrician or facilities contractor. We coordinate the work so the UPS is installed correctly.

Is the APC SRTG20KXLI available in Dubai?

Yes, it is available in Dubai on quotation. Availability can change because 20kVA UPS units are often supplied against project requirement. Send the load list, runtime target and site location by WhatsApp and we will confirm price, lead time and installation scope.

Comparable APC UPS models

APC 10kVA online UPS: Better fit for a smaller rack with one or two servers, firewall, switches and short runtime requirement. Lower electrical and cooling load than a 20kVA unit.

APC 15kVA online UPS: Fits the middle ground where 10kVA is too tight but the site does not need the full 20kW output of the SRTG20KXLI.

APC SRTG20KXLI: Right when the load is close to 12–16kW today and growth is expected, or when the customer wants enough headroom for a server rack, storage and network core.

Modular three-phase UPS: Better for multi-rack data rooms, larger colocation-style setups or sites needing N+1 planning. For Equinix, Khazna or Gulf Data Hub style deployments, the UPS design usually belongs in the broader facility power plan.

Africa, GCC and MEA export from Dubai

Vector Digital Systems supplies APC UPS systems from Dubai for export projects across GCC, Africa and South Asia. The SRTG20KXLI is commonly requested for branch server rooms, bank back offices, logistics sites, education networks and healthcare IT rooms where protected power is needed but a full data centre UPS system is too large.

FOB Dubai pricing is available for Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and other project destinations. For export, share voltage requirement, destination country, runtime target and battery preference before we quote.

Large UPS shipments need careful packing and freight planning because of weight and battery rules. We help with model selection, documentation and quote preparation for resellers, contractors and IT project teams buying from Dubai.
