What Thuraya Actually Is
Thuraya is a satellite phone network operated by Space42 (Yahsat Group), an Emirati space company headquartered in Abu Dhabi. Its two geostationary satellites cover more than 160 countries across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia — and its airtime is the cheapest of the three satellite networks. In Dubai, Thuraya handsets start from around AED 2,300 with airtime cards from AED 450.
Two geostationary satellites sit over the equator, roughly 36,000 km up, covering the part of the world this region actually works in. Because the network is regional rather than global, the plans cost less — meaningfully less per minute than the global alternatives — and the coverage is engineered for the Middle East, Africa and Asia rather than spread thin over everywhere.
And the network is still growing: the new Thuraya 4 satellite launched recently, built and flown by the same Abu Dhabi team. A common question lately is whether satellite phones are fading as smartphones gain satellite features — the operator's answer is a new satellite in orbit and a new flagship handset (the Thuraya One) on the shelf this year.
Where Thuraya Works — and Where It Doesn't
Works: all seven emirates and the whole region — Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon — plus Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia, more than 160 countries in total. The Empty Quarter at noon, offshore in the Arabian Gulf, a site in Uganda, a project in Kazakhstan. If your operations live anywhere on that map, Thuraya is usually the right network — and the cheapest one to run.
Doesn't work: the Americas. North, Central and South America sit outside the two satellites' footprint. This is the single most important fact in choosing a satellite network, and the one buyers most often learn the expensive way — after landing.

Thuraya Airtime — Plans That Fit the Map
Thuraya's airtime is the cheapest of the three satellite networks — the direct benefit of a regional network instead of a global one. Cards start from AED 450, and the plans flex around how you actually use the phone: prepaid scratch vouchers for occasional users and backup phones, monthly bundles for teams in the field, and unlimited data options for IP+ broadband terminals at fixed monthly rates.
The plan we recommend depends on three answers: how many minutes a month you'll actually talk, whether those calls are inside the region or beyond it, and whether the phone is a daily tool or a backup in a drawer. Your work is deep-ocean or polar. Past the equatorial footprint — far southern oceans, polar routes — Iridium's 66 low-orbit satellites reach what geostationary ones can't.
You mostly need broadband, not voice. If the requirement is real internet for a site or vessel, a data terminal (IP+, Orion IP) or a conversation about options fits better than a voice handset with a data trickle.
Handing you to the right network costs us nothing — you buy from the same team either way. Selling you the wrong one would cost you a lot more than the phone.

Does Thuraya work everywhere in the UAE?
Yes — anywhere in all seven emirates with a view of the sky: cities, the Empty Quarter, offshore waters, and the northern mountains. Indoors you need an external antenna or a step to a window or open area, since satellite signals don't penetrate buildings well — and we supply the antennas for fixed-site setups.
Does Thuraya work in the USA or the Americas?
No — Thuraya's two geostationary satellites cover the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia (160+ countries), but not North, Central or South America. For travel or operations there, Iridium is the only network with 100% of Earth. Note that dual-SIM models (Thuraya One, XT-PRO DUAL) still work in the Americas as normal phones on local networks — just not on satellite.

Thuraya or Starlink — what's the difference?
Different products for different needs. Starlink is broadband internet for fixed or portable sites — high-speed data, not voice calling. Thuraya is voice-first satellite telephony: calls and SMS from a handset that fits in your pocket, works while moving, and costs a fraction of the hardware. If you need phone calls and reachability, Thuraya. If you need internet for a site, that's a different conversation.
My phone has satellite SOS — is that the same as Thuraya?
No — phone-based satellite features send a text to a rescue coordination center. They can't call your office, your crew or your family. A Thuraya phone makes real two-way calls with any number on Earth, whenever you need it. One is a distress beacon; the other is a working phone.

Yes — every Thuraya handset gets its own number on the Thuraya network, activated with your airtime plan. Are satellite phones legal in the UAE?
